Colum McCann was born in Dublin in 1965. He has been based in New York for over fifteen years. His first book, Fishing the Sloe Black River (London, Phoenix House, 1994), was a collection of short-stories. Since then he has published two novels, Song Dogs, (Phoenix House, 1995; New York, Henry Holt, 1995) and This Side of Brightness (London, Orion, 1998). The latter was nominated for the Irish Times Aer Lingus Award and the Impac Award 2000. Subsequently he wrote Everything In This Country Must (Phoenix House, 2000), a collection of three stories which deal with the effects of violence on children in Northern Ireland. Colum McCann won a Hennessey Award in 1990.
