Colum McCann's third novel, Dancer, an insight into the life of Rudolph Nureyev (1938-1993), is scheduled for publication early in 2003. Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union in 1961 having played leading roles with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad. He became director of the Paris Opera Ballet, and formed a legendary partnership with Dame Margot Fonteyn. McCann's Dancer follows Nureyev from stage to stage in his dizzy international career, involving along the way other characters sucked into the dancer's slipstream. Nureyev's glory and subsequent fall become a metaphor for the Soviet Union, a country which, like McCann's native Ireland, was the cradle of many exiled artists in the twentieth century.
