Sigurbjorg Thrastardóttir's debut novel, Sólar saga (Sun Story), recently received the Tómas Guðmundsson Literary Prize in Iceland, granted every other year by the Mayor of Reykjavík.
The novel follows the attempted recovery of 23-year old Sól, after she suffers a brutal sexual attack on the outskirts of the beautiful city of Bologna. Sól, Icelandic by origin, had moved to Italy to pursue her studies and search for her own private path in life. To survive the post-traumatic effects of the assault and to mend her broken self, Sól conceives an original plan involving the arcades and columns of the historical city.
Cutting herself off from beloved ones and turning to buildings for comfort, Sól is haunted by flashbacks from her darkest hour, along with happier memories from her childhood in the cold north. Her story becomes an intriguing quest along the winding roads of the mind and the brick lanes of Bologna.
Critics have commented on the book's poetic quality. The jury's report describes Sólar saga as "a engaging story ... written with a notable gift of style". The daily Morgunblaðið said: "[Thrastardóttir] depicts the aftermath of serious abuse by means of effective imagery, making Sólar saga a rewarding read for all those who love good fiction."
Sólar saga is Thrastardóttir's first novel. She is the author of two poetry collections and has contributed to various anthologies.
