POETRY: Wolf One-Eye

Juris Kronbergs

The poet and translator Juris Kronbergs was born in Stockholm in 1946. His parents - his father is the painter Rudolfs Kronbergs - emigrated to Sweden in 1945 to escape the Soviet occupation of Latvia. Juris Kronbergs studied Nordic and Baltic languages and literary history at Stockholm University. He lives in two cultures - translating both from Swedish into Latvian and from Latvian into Swedish, and writing his poetry in both languages. His first poetry collection Pazemes dzeja (Underground Poetry) was published in the form of poetry sheets and posters. Kronbergs has served as chairman of Latvian PEN, has worked as an interpreter for the Swedish government and held the post of cultural attaché at the Latvian embassy in Stockholm. He is the leading translator of Latvian literature to Swedish and is an honorary member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
