Half a century of Stalinist dictatorship had left Albania with little more than universal misery and a sub-Saharan economy. The beginning of the nineties thus found the Albanian nation in a political and economic catastrophe that had dramatic repercussions for the evolution of contemporary literature and culture. After several years of experimentation, a new generation has arisen which, with its notable literary achievements, is now helping Albania to regain its place among the nations of Europe.
