Parthian: Under the Dust
Independent Welsh publishing takes the translation lead
Welsh independent publishing is gradually putting the larger UK publishing houses to shame with its growing list of literature in translation. Parthian, who also have the good fortune of being the publishing home to this year's Dylan Thomas Prize winner Fresh Apples by Rachel Trezise, will publish Under the Dust by the Catalan writer Jordi Coca in April 2007. Also forthcoming with Parthian is the English translation of Caryl Lewis' haunting Welsh language novel Martha, Jac and Shanco, winner of Wales Book of the Year in 2005. An English language extract from Martha, Jac and Shanco was featured in Transcript 22.

Meanwhile, in 2007, Seren plans publication of a collection of short stories translated from the Dutch, an anthology of Quebecois poetry and a translation of the novel The Loser, written by Albania's foremost post-1991 fiction writer Fatos Kongoli.

Transcript applauds the translation efforts of independent publishers in the UK such as Parthian and Seren, and hopes that larger publishers will take a leaf out of their book and follow suit.
