Georgi Gospodinov's Natural Novel is in the unusual position - for a novel written in one of Europe's so-called 'smaller' languages - of having been translated into English and French, with a German translation also forthcoming later this year.
The excerpt featured here is preoccupied with the social function of the toilet. Gospodinov writes that, under Communism, "the courage of society was displayed on the toilet wall". Magda Cârneci's Political Quintett asks what post- Communist society plans to do with its new-found liberty? Now that civil courage has moved out of the (water) closet and through the streets and squares of revolution, what comes next?
