A Matter of Self-esteem and other stories
Carme Riera, A Matter of Self-esteem and other stories; translated by Roser Caminals-Heath with Holly Cashman. - New York : Holmes & Meier, 2001
Carme Riera (Mallorca, 1948) is, together with her fellow Majorcan Baltasar Porcel, one of the narrative voices in the Catalan language who is most appreciated by the critics and who has the highest international profile. She came to the attention of the public in the 1970s with two collections of stories Te deix, amor, la mar com a penyora and Jo pos per testimoni les gavines, which were a tremendous critical and commercial success. In A Matter of Self-esteem (originally published in 1987), she took up the epistolary genre to relate a love story with a dark and sordid background: a simple enough premise, dealt with with both skill and efficiency.
