Annika Svahnström was born in the island of Gotland in Sweden in 1942, and graduated from Uppsala university in 1965, majoring in Arts and Literature. She worked as a journalist and public relations officer until 1977, then joined the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and held postings in New York, Ankara, New Delhi and Seoul.

Between 2001-2009 she was responsible for the newly established Section for Turkish Swedish Cooperation at the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul. She then took a keen interest in the literary scene in Turkey, and was instrumental in introducing young Turkish writers in Sweden.

In the summer of 2009 she was invited to join the translation workshop at Cunda. This inspired her to apply to the two year programme for literary translators from Turkish to Swedish at Södertörn University in Sweden. She was one of the five students accepted.

After retiring from diplomatic duty, she has settled in Gotland, where the Baltic Center for Writers and Translators is located. She is currently working on translations from Turkish into Swedish of Baris Bicakci and Ayfer Tunc.
