Gilbert Calleja

Gilbert Calleja (b. 1978) graduated in drawing and painting from the Malta School of Arts. He holds a BA (Hons) in Art from the University of Malta and a ‘Licence’ and ‘Maitrise d’Arts Plastiques’ (Fine Arts) from the University of Paris, Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne.

He has worked with numerous NGOs and also, for a couple of years, with MediaToday Ltd (Malta) gaining experience in reporting, page layout and news photography. His work has been featured in a number of local and foreign magazines and newspapers such as Newsweek Russia, the Guardian and Ottar magazine (Sweden).

He has also organized and participated in a number of exhibitions including the Valletta Photo Festival, Valletta, Relocation: Six Emerging artists (St Venera, Malta), Caochangdi Photospring, (Beijing, China), Malta and the European Journey (Valletta, Malta), Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles, (Arles & Paris, France), and Reportage, a solo documentary photography exhibition at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta.

His current interests in photography focus on the ambiguities surrounding gender and alternative/peripheral lifestyles.
