Scritture Giovanni 2003
Scritture Giovani was conceived by Festivaletteratura, Mantova and partner festivals in Europe to promote young European writers. It came into being in 2002 thanks to the support of the Cultural Programme 2000 of the European Union. This year, the project is again marked by the involvement of some of Europe's leading literary festivals.

Scritture Giovani 2003 set five promising young European writers the task of revisiting a theme which has immediate relevance to our lives. The theme? 'Borders: invisible marks on the earth, (in)surmountable limits'. In this collection, Bjarte Breiteig, Richard John Evans, Angharad Price, Tilman Rammstedt and Flavio Soriga open a cross-border confrontation with the reader. This dynamic dialogue offered them the role of protagonists at four of the most important literary festivals in Europe.

Festivaletteratura, together with The Guardian Hay Festival, Literaturfestival Berlin and Bjørnsonfestivalen Molde og Nesset, with the support of illycaffè, continues its drive to promote young writers, carrying on the momentum which was launched last year with such success. The hundreds of people who, at the participating festivals in 2002, crowded the meetings of Scritture Giovani showed the strength of public interest in literary expression which deals with aspects of generational discontinuity, extending their welcome to inflexions and influences capable of loosening consolidated codes. In this spirit of discovery, Scritture Giovani is happy to nurture those voices which are not yet well established and to act as a stimulus to the development of new literary talents.

Scritture Giovani was conceived by Festivaletteratura to promote young European writers. It came into being in 2002 thanks to the support of the Cultural Programme 2000 of the European Union. This year, the project is again marked by the involvement of some of Europe's leading literary festivals - Festivaletteratura (Italy), the Guardian Hay Festival (United Kingdom), Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin (Germany) and the Bjørnsonfestivalen Molde og Nesset (Norway). These festivals hope to launch budding writers onto the literary scene in the four participating countries.

Scritture Giovani also enables the four participating festivals to accomplish something further: beyond acting as privileged places for the public and for new and established writers to meet, these four European festivals -Festivaletteratura, the Guardian Hay Festival, Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin and the Bjørnsonfestivalen Molde og Nesset - underscore their own initiatory purpose in bringing a new generation of writers to the public's attention.

For 2003, Scritture Giovani has chosen five young authors who express themselves in five different languages (English, German, Italian, Norwegian and Welsh). Following the formula which worked so well last year, Scritture Giovani means to bring about the following:
-the publication in five different languages of a short story collection: each author will write a short story specially for the project which will then form part of Scritture Giovani. The theme chosen as the conducting thread for the stories is borders;
-the inclusion of the five authors in the 2003 publications brought out by the four festivals; each author will face the literate European public by giving a reading and engaging in discussions with other authors who are already established at international level.
